Welcome to project #1 of Daily STEM Challenge! We’re starting off this week with one of the kid’s favorite building supplies: marshmallows! Today’s STEM challenge is to build a six inch tall structure using only toothpicks and mini marshmallows!
This is a great project for STEM lovers of any age. The kids will enjoy experimenting with different building methods and seeing each other’s success and failures helps them to revise their approach along the way.
our group quickly realized that building with triangles was the most successful (although the little one abandoned the six inch tall goal for more creative building, but hey, whatever gets them thinking outside the box!)
Three kids went through one bag of mini marshmallows and one box of 500 toothpicks quickly, so plan ahead if you’re doing this in a classroom setting. The dollar store was a great source for these supplies.
The winning structure had a hexoganal base and was made of combining triangles until the desired height was met.
